Cinema in Santa Catarina’s German colonies (1900 – 1938)

This work seeks to trace the origins and development of cinema in the German immigrant colonies in the state of Santa Catarina. As a case study, we analyze the ways in which cinema established itself in the cultural circuit of the region, how it was affected by local economic conditions and by the political and social turbulence experienced in the region in the first half of the 20th century. In particular, we examine the relationship between cinema and the formation and maintenance of the German-Brazilian identity cultivated by the region's population, especially with regard to the relationship between the new cinematic attraction and the traditional Germanic cultural institutions: the cultural associations (vereine).
