The trajectory and strategic relevance of children's audiences for Brazilian cinema and audiovisual development

This article examines the trajectory of the children's audience and its relationship with Brazilian cinema and audiovisuals, highlighting the strategic relevance of this segment for the survival and sovereignty of national cinematography. Despite being marginalized in academic studies, the analysis reveals that productions aimed at children were crucial in critical periods, such as the 1990s crisis, when they accounted for 68% of the audience among the most-watched Brazilian films after the dismantling of Embrafilme. The study maps from the earliest initiatives linked to the idea of educational cinema to the current diversity of works on platforms, demonstrating the importance of children's audience formation for the sector's development. It also discusses the importance of specific public policies, such as laws addressing the inclusion of cinema in schools and recent screen quota legislation, as strategies to cultivate new generations of Brazilian spectators. Finally, the article concludes that investment in audience formation, as well as in the development of works dedicated to children's cinema and audiovisuals, represents a strategic element for Brazilian cultural sovereignty and for ensuring the continuity and diversity of national production in the face of the challenges facing the audiovisual sector.
