Interview with Sol de Carvalho

This interview was conducted with Mozambican director Sol de Carvalho (João Luís Sol de Carvalho) in Maputo between September 2024 and March 2025, and focused on his experiences in film production, allowing us to explore Mozambican cinema and the representation of women in Mozambican films. Born in Beira, Mozambique, in 1953, Sol de Carvalho grew up in Inhambane and, between 1972 and 1974, studied film at the National Conservatory of Cinema School in Lisbon, Portugal, where he graduated. In this conversation, he discusses aspects of his life and work as a filmmaker, photographer, environmentalist, and advocate for women's rights. This journey through the life and work of Sol de Carvalho allowed us to perceive that as an artist he is a filmmaker inspired by magical realism, where, in a fusion between Mozambican traditions and female bodies, he expresses the unspeakable and makes the invisible visible through audiovisual means. Thus, he advocates for the cause of Mozambican women, who find themselves in a marginalized situation in Mozambican society, unable to own their own bodies and their own lives.
