The purpose of this essay is to analyze the film (Steven Spielberg, 1985) based on the assumptions of black feminism presented in the work (2019) by Patricia Hill Collins. This qualitative research uses film analysis procedures, as proposed by Vanoye and Goliot-Lété (1994) to conduct a debate about the living conditions of three characters in the film: Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), Shug Avery (Margaret Avery), and Sofia (Oprah Winfrey). Based on the novel written by Alice Walker, published in 1982, the first version of the film has premiered in 1985 and received a new interpretation in 2023. The film, both in its classic work and in the film versions, brings to light the reality of oppression and controlling images to which African American women were subjected. Its analysis is not limited to addressing issues related to minorities, but also stands out for its specific representation of black women and their multifaceted struggle against racism, sexism, machismo, and labor exploitation, taking as reference the three central characters that will be analyzed.
